(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 7 - A worker is dead due to a suspected
explosion on Tuesday at a worksite for the Terzo Valico (Third
Pass) Tortona-Genoa high-speed railway, sources said.
Another worker was injured in the accident, which may have been
caused by gas leak during excavation work, at Voltaggio, in the
Piedmont province of Alessandria.
Gaetano Nigro of the Fillea Cgil trade union said the dead
worker was a 33-year-old man from Sicily, while the injured man
is a 54-year-old.
Silvia Marchetti of UGL trade union said workplace accidents and
deaths are still far too frequent in Italy.
"We are faced with a full-blown massacre in the workplace that
cannot be tolerated," Marchetti said.
"We call on local and national institutions to implement
interventions to intensify checks (on health-and-safety
measures).
"It is also fundamentally important to strengthen training and
the culture of safety at work in order to prevent such
tragedies". (ANSA).
